You’ve probably heard the term “Freon” used in lieu of “refrigerant.” While it’s not the type of refrigerant used in standard air conditioners, you have probably heard that it’s a chemical that helps with the process of refrigeration.

Refrigerants are able to absorb heat somewhat easily and release it into the air under the right pressure and temperature. The refrigerant absorbs heat from the air in your home and transfers it to the outside air. Because it’s so vital to the cooling process, it is a possibility that, when the air conditioner isn’t working properly, it’s low on refrigerant.

But it’s not the only reason for an AC repair issue

Low levels of refrigerant could be responsible for a number of problems with an air conditioner. You might notice some of the following issues if your air conditioner is lacking the proper level of refrigerant, which is carefully measured when an air conditioner is first installed.

  • The air from the vents is too warm.
  • Your cooling bills are particularly high.
  • The air conditioner cycles on and off too frequently.

…but these issues can be caused by so many other things as well. It may have to do with the compressor, the fan motor, the outside coil, or even a dirty air filter.

Refrigerant shouldn’t leave the system

Many people have a misconception about needing refrigerants once every season. But this simply isn’t the case. When an air conditioner isn’t working properly, many people say, “It probably just needs refrigerant.” However, an air conditioner shouldn’t need a new refrigerant each and every year.

Your air conditioner is designed so that refrigerants should not leak out. Though heat dissipates into the air around the outside unit, the refrigerant should never dissipate. If it does, you have a leak.

If a technician says you only need more refrigerant, ask questions. Ask whether there’s a leak that needs sealing, and be sure to get a second opinion if you doubt that refrigerant is the sole source of the problem.
