Where Is the Water Coming From?

Water forms on an air conditioner as an expected part of the refrigeration process. The evaporator coil of your AC system cools down immensely as the refrigerant inside absorbs heat. When warm, humid air blows over this coil from inside of your home, condensation can collect outside of this coil.

But this water usually has somewhere to go. The water drips into a tray and flows into a hole that leads to a drain pipe. The condensate should drain outdoors unless there is something wrong. The drain pan could be misaligned, cracked, or corroded, the drain line may be clogged, or there could be a more serious issue, and you’ll need a professional to know for sure.

What Should You Do?

The very first step you should take is turning off your AC system. After that, you may need to call a technician if you don’t have the right equipment. But if you have a shop vac at home, you can connect this to the PVC drain line outside where the condensate drains. Sometimes, the problem is caused by condensate drain clogs that back up water and force it to overflow into the home. When the drain is cleared, try turning the air conditioner on again and see if this solves the problem.
