The ENERGY STAR label is a seal of approval from the EPA for excellent performance and energy efficiency. The SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) tells you how efficient the system will be. A SEER greater than 16 indicates a high-efficiency system that should save you a lot of money if it is properly installed.

Other Considerations

For maximum performance and efficiency, you should look for a modern system with variable speed settings. This operates a lot like cruise control, automatically adjusting the fan to help keep temperatures as close to the thermostat settings as possible. If you want zone control, a system in which you are able to adjust the temperature separately in different areas of the home, tell your contractor so that it can be installed during your new AC installation.
