No Need to Load Up on Blankets…Unless You Want to

We live in Florida, which means we get to wear shorts most of the year. It also means our neighbors in the north don’t feel bad for us when we say it’s cold out (vice versa when they try to tell us it’s hot in the summer!) Regardless, this is our chilly season, so we’re sharing some tips for staying cozy at home.

Whether you rely on a furnace or heat pump system, there are plenty of ways to stay even warmer without breaking the bank. Here are just a few of our favorite home heating tips.

Get Cozy
Your most-treasured flannel pajamas. A big blanket, maybe two. A hot cup of coffee and your favorite snack in front of the TV. Sometimes, your go-to comforts are the easiest and most enjoyable ways to warm up after being out in the cold. If you’re feeling chilly when you’re trying to fall asleep, you may want to consider a heavy duvet or comforter.

Don’t Be Afraid to Crank Up the Heat
Your home’s heating system was designed to keep you warm, so there’s no reason to fear turning up the thermostat when you need to warm up. Investing in a smart thermostat, though, can help you regulate your home’s temperature with ease and avoid unnecessary spikes in your energy bill. But if you find yourself needing to turn the heat up too often…

Check for and Seal Cracks or Openings in Your Home
There are plenty of ways the cold air can creep into your home without you realizing it. Older windows may let in drafts that cause your home to feel much colder than it should. Take the time to search for potential cracks or openings, and then caulk and seal them to help trap heat inside. If you’re still having issues or feeling drafts, it might be time to replace your windows. Use draft stoppers for doors that are allowing the cold air to come through.

Get Cooking!
For a good portion of the year, the oven is the last appliance you want to use. But during a cold snap, use it to your advantage! Test out that pie recipe you’ve been wanting to try or make a casserole that you normally can’t in the summer. The heat generated from your oven will help warm up your indoor air. Just be sure to use the oven for what it was designed to do: cook food. Turn it off when the food is done cooking and never use the oven as a makeshift space heater. Not only is this dangerous, but it’s also going to increase your energy bills.
