A broken air conditioning system is not something you can deal with for very long, and you want the issue resolved ASAP.
Calling a local technician to make repairs is always wise. DIY repairs can be disastrous, and you might end up with more problems on your hand than what you started with. Professionals can typically identify problems faster and quality techs will keep you informed and make sure you know all of your repair options.
But there may be something that you could have done to resolve the issue, regardless of your level of experience with AC systems. Don’t waste your time and money. Check these 3 things first before calling an AC repair technician!
Your Circuit Breaker
If the air conditioner will not turn on at all, you might need to reset the circuit breaker (or replace a fuse if you still have an older box). If this works, you might not experience problems for a long time to come. But if you have to reset the circuit breaker many times a year because of the AC, there are larger issues that should be addressed by a professional HVAC technician.
The Thermostat
There are a few things you should look for to make sure your thermostat isn’t the problem.
- Check the batteries. If the screen is blank or malfunctioning, try changing the batteries if it’s not wired into the home. If it is wired in, try the circuit breaker.
- Check the settings. Make sure it isn’t in “heat” or “fan-only” mode.
- Check the temperature. To see that it is actually set to a temperature lower than the room’s current temperature.
The Filter
If the air conditioning system is not running up to your standards or if it shuts off frequently, it could be a problem with the air filter. Dirt in the filter stops air from getting through, which can cause the fan to become overworked and the system to shut off. Otherwise, you might notice higher temperatures or poor airflow through the vents.
