Keep Your Furry Friends Cool This Summer

Here at Buehler Air Conditioning, we have a pretty awesome reputation to uphold, especially when it comes to maintaining our cool—and yours! So, to uphold our totally rad coolness factor, owner Jason Buehler Air Conditioning did what many homeowners did during the height of the pandemic. He adopted a new family pet! Dude Buehler Air Conditioning, a French bulldog, arrived at the Buehler Air Conditioning homestead in November 2020. And it’s been nothing but puppy love ever since!

As a result, we understand 100% how pet owners feel about their fuzzy kids. In fact, to keep our own Dude safe this month, we’re doing more than just keeping our air conditioning at a cool level for him. We’re also celebrating dog safety by recognizing National Pet Fire Safety Day on July 15!

Keep Pets Safe This Summer!

When it comes to our pets, we have many safety concerns. And while July 15 recognizes fire safety for pets, we’re here to lend a paw in sharing all kinds of pet tips for the summer. Here are 10 ideas to help your furry friends live their best life in the midst of a steamy summer.

1. Get a free sticker.
Check with your local fire department about getting a free pet window sticker. Place these clings in your home’s windows for extra safety. Then if, heaven forbid, you ever experience a house fire, first responders will see your sticker and know there’s a pet inside.

2. Plan a fire evacuation drill.
When you have kids, planning an escape route for a fire or hurricane is a great strategy. But don’t forget about your pets! Make a plan and put a family member in charge of removing pets during an emergency.

3. Offer plenty of water and shade.
If you think you feel hot on a sweltering Florida day, just imagine how your pet feels! Be sure Fluffy and Fido have plenty of cool water to quench their thirsts and lots of shady spots to lie down in when they’re outside.

4. Check pavement temperature.
If you have an outdoor cat or you regularly walk your dog, be sure to touch the pavement prior to heading outdoors. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your pet’s paws, too. Keep cats indoors and wait to walk your pup until the evening hours when the temperature cools down.

5. Know a pet’s heatstroke signs.
Does your pet seem overheated? He or she could be suffering from heatstroke. Signs include fast heartbeat, excessive panting, high fever, vomiting and warm, dry skin. Contact your veterinarian immediately if your pet suffers from these symptoms.

6. Let your pet enjoy the AC!
Even if you’re at the office during the day, be sure to keep your home’s air conditioning at a reasonable temperature for your buddy. Don’t scold your pet for lying on top of the vents to catch a cool breeze!

7. Cut back on exercise during really hot days.
It’s OK to skip that exercise when the heat is dangerous. Instead, reward your pup with doggie ice cream or keep your cats cool by playing “catch the ice cube” with them!

8. Use that baby pool.
Toddlers aren’t the only ones who enjoy splashing in a baby pool. Dogs have built-in cooling mechanisms on the bottom of their paws to help keep them cool. Let them splash their paws in a baby pool and they’ll cool down quickly on steamy days.

9. Take notice of panting in cats.
While dogs cool themselves down through panting, cats do not. Panting is not a normal cooling action for cats and can mean they are very sick. Take your cat to the vet immediately if you notice panting.

10. Never leave pets in hot cars. Ever.
While this is a no-brainer in our eyes, it’s still a good reminder. Never take your pet with you on sweltering days and leave them in the car. Just don’t do it.
