Try Our Indoor Tips to Sleep Like a Baby
On March 14, we will once again turn our clocks ahead as part of Daylight Saving Time. This means longer days, brighter sun, and the promise that spring will arrive soon. But, for some, losing an hour of sleep knocks us off of our regular schedule and creates challenges as we try to find ways to reset our internal clocks. If this happens to you, we feel for you.
But you’re not alone. Irregular sleep is a real problem for 25% of the adult population. It’s also something that can improve when you make little changes. So Buehler Air Conditioning would like to try to help! If you’re ready to get those Zzzz’s back in order, let’s start with your indoor air quality!
4 Tips for Better Sleep
Would you like to make 2021 the year of better sleep? For starters, try these four simple changes.
1. Upgrade your air quality.
Indoor air can be up to 10 times more polluted than outdoor air. With that in mind, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that poor indoor air quality can directly affect your sleep. There are many airborne chemicals in your home that can enter your body. So, your first step should be to consider where you spend the most time sleeping—your bedroom. Be sure your bedroom is a safe zone that is free of any and all toxic chemicals, such as air fresheners, candles, aerosol sprays, strong paint smells, and other similar toxins. If you need help clearing your air of unwanted pollutants you’d be wise to invest in a quality air purifier. Place one in your bedroom to clean your air and boost your sleep! Or, for total peace of mind, Buehler Air Conditioning can install a whole-house IAQ system to purify your entire home! Better sleep will soon follow.
2. Invest in a smart thermostat.
Did you know that indoor temperatures can affect your sleep patterns? It’s true. Warm air can cause restlessness and raise your heart rate and blood pressure—which often impedes a good sleep. Cooler air helps bring your heart rate down so you feel more comfortable and fall asleep quicker. A great way to control your indoor air is to invest in a smart thermostat. You can easily set these beauties to automatically lower temperatures at night. Then, when you hit that pillow, you’re in for a super cool slumber.
3. Watch what you drink.
The older people get, the more they are affected by what goes into their bodies. Drinks with caffeine such as soda, coffee, and tea can hinder a good sleep since they elevate your heart rate and can make you feel jittery. For a decent sleep, you need to be calm and relaxed a few hours before bed. Alcohol can also cause frequent bouts of wakefulness during the night. Be mindful of what you drink prior to bedtime and your body—and your sleep— will thank you.
4. Put down the devices and pick up a book.
When your mind races, you simply can’t sleep. Devices such as smartphones and tablets keep our minds busy and are a huge sleep deterrent. Put the electronics down a good hour before bedtime to declutter your mind and sleep better. If you need a substitute, pick up a book and adopt a nightly reading routine. Reading is a known stress-reliever, so dedicating 15 to 30 minutes to a good book prior to bedtime offers great benefits!
