You may have heard before how important it is to change the air filter in your AC system (and heater). What you might not know is that this is important for the well-being of your air conditioning system—and not just for your health. In fact, the very first air filters were to designed because, without them, the system is at risk of getting pelted by incoming particles from the air of your home.

Filters are mainly in place for the good of your system, but they are also designed to keep allergens and contaminants out of the air. But does your air filter do enough to keep you healthy?

A Standard Filter Might Not Be Very Effective

If you’re one of those lucky people who rarely gets sick, doesn’t have allergies, and has no preexisting conditions like asthma, the standard air filter (likely already in place in your AC system) might be just fine for you. As long as it effectively blocks most particles and protects your air conditioning system, your air filter is working.

But you should know that not every filter is effective at removing the very small particles that cause the most trouble for your health, your family’s health, and the well-being of your guests. Bacteria, mold spores, pollen, pet dander, smoke, and more can still move through the filter and reach the vents of your home.

Upgrading a Filter for Better Health

The MERV (minimum efficiency reporting value) scale is something that can help you to select the best filter for your needs. The least effective (and most basic) filters have a MERV rating of 1. The most effective have a MERV of 16-20. However, these highly effective filters often have fibers that are too tightly woven, which could restrict airflow and force your AC unit to struggle.

We recommend consulting with a technician if you need a new air filter so that they can ensure that your filter does not inhibit airflow to the system. Alternatively, you can call a technician to install a whole-home air filtration system that works along with your filter to get the majority of allergens and irritants out of the air.
