Do Your Research Before Scheduling This Service
You are sick of indoor air quality issues controlling your health. And you may have even noticed that the problem gets worse when you run your air conditioning system. Some companies offer a service that claims to eliminate your symptoms by getting dust out of the ducts your air travels through before it gets to the rooms in your home: professional air duct cleaning.
However, we recommend against scheduling this service, at least until you’ve done your research! Typically, duct cleaning really isn’t necessary, and there are better ways to get healthier air. Besides, it’s often a scam!
Dirty Ducts Probably Aren’t the Problem
Yes, over time, a layer of dust can build up inside of the metal air ducts in your HVAC system. However, this dust is likely to stay in the ducts for a very long time. The air moving through your ducts simply moves past it most of the time, and the dust in the ducts likely is not the main cause of your poor indoor air quality. In fact, to date, there is no proof that duct cleaning improves indoor air quality at all.
There Are Better Solutions
If you really want to clean the air coming through the vents, it should be cleaned as it enters the HVAC system. It may be that all you need is a really good filter. However, a quality air purifier or whole-home air filtration system can remove the smallest of allergens and irritants, including pollen, pet dander, dust mites, mold spores, and even bacteria and viruses. Ask a local HVAC technician about adding indoor air quality equipment to your AC system.
Buyer Beware: Your Duct Cleaning Service May Be a Scam
If you decide that you still want duct cleaning service after all, we still want to make sure you are cautious. Unfortunately, there have been many documented cases of duct cleaning scams. Some companies or individuals prey on those who may now know much about how an HVAC system works, believing the ducts need cleaning. In actuality, these companies might only make a lot of noise without doing much cleaning, or they could worsen the air quality by kicking up more dust!
