How Does a Ductless Air Conditioner Work?
While some homes in our area are built without ducts, others are renovated to include rooms without ductwork extended to them. In either case, a ductless air conditioning system can meet all of your cooling needs without using up excessive amounts of energy. A ductless mini split is a hassle-free way to get efficient cooling throughout your home or to a single room, but how do these unique units work?
The Layout of a Ductless System
When many people think about an air conditioning system without ducts, they picture those single-room window air conditioners which do a poor job of cooling a room completely. Actually, ductless systems are more like traditional central air conditioners. There is an outside unit and an inside air handler, or several indoor air handlers if you are cooling a whole home. These blowers are mounted high up on a wall. Most ductless units are actually heat pumps, which means they can heat the space as well.
How It Works
Ductless units work just like regular heat pumps and air conditioners. Refrigerant travels between the outdoor system and the indoor air handler(s). As the blower moves air over the coils of the air handler, refrigerant absorbs heat. The heat dissipates outside when refrigerant goes to the outdoor coil. The only difference is the lack of ducts, as air can blow directly into the room without the need for a duct system. And a ductless heat pump contains additional components which allow it to run in reverse and move heat from the outside to the inside.
Schedule Ductless Services with a Professional
Though ductless systems are durable and long-lasting, a ductless system does require services from time to time. Regular ductless AC maintenance helps to keep the air conditioner running smoothly, preventing repairs, lowering monthly bills and potentially keeping it around for longer. Be sure to call for repairs as soon as you notice a problem with your ductless system to keep the issue from worsening.
